Farms that use a Fortis card reader can accept SNAP/EBT in person through GrownBy Register.
What you need
- A Fortis account with terminal payments enabled for your farm, and a Fortis card reader selected under Settings → Payments (see The Settings screen on Register)
- Products marked as SNAP-eligible, so Register knows how much of the order the card can pay for (see Marking a product SNAP-eligible)
If your farm does not have Fortis terminals set up, EBT does not appear as a payment option at checkout.
Taking an EBT payment
- Build the customer's cart as usual and tap Charge.
- Choose EBT from the payment methods.
- Confirm the card reader you want to use.
- Choose the EBT Type. Both Food Stamp and Cash Benefit are allowed by default, which lets the customer choose on the reader. You can narrow it to one type if you only want to accept that kind of benefit.
- Tap to start the payment and have the customer insert or swipe their card and enter their PIN on the reader.
If only some items in the cart are SNAP-eligible, the screen shows the eligible amount and the remainder still due. The EBT card is only charged for the eligible portion, and you collect the rest on another payment method such as cash or a credit card in the same checkout.
If nothing in the cart is SNAP-eligible, the screen says No items in this order are EBT eligible and no charge is attempted.
Refunds
Food Stamp EBT payments can be refunded from Register during a payment session or from an invoice. Cash Benefit EBT payments cannot be refunded through GrownBy and need to be settled with the customer directly.
