Customization from a Customer Perspective

GrownBy’s customizable share system make it easy for you to get the vegetables that you want. This article will walk you through what to expect if you’re a customers and will help you understand what your customers’ experience is if you are a farmer.

Before each distribution, there will be a window during which you can customize your share. Your farmer sets the open and close day and time and GrownBy will alert you when it is time to customize.

You will get an email and app notification when your customization window opens. The email contains a link to your farm’s shop. Or, you can log into GrownBy directly.  You’ll see a pop up and a purple banner across the top of the app telling you that it’s time to customize.

Click on “Let’s Go!” or “Go to Customization Page.”





When you open the customization, GrownBy will create a share that you can edit. To influence the share that GrownBy builds for you, you can click on “Change Preferences.” A pop-up will give you space to tell us what you like and don’t like. Your preferences will be saved.



If you are satisfied with this share and want to check out, click on “Looks Good to Me!” This will add these items to your card and you can checkout as usual. A discount code will be automatically applied to your cart for the value of your weekly share. Review your cart and click on “checkout.” Review again and click “Place order.”

If you’d like to add, remove, or swap items, click “Add or Edit Products.” Once you’ve edited your share to be the items you’d prefer, click on the cart icon in the top right corner. This will take you through the checkout process.

If you have an order total equal to or less than the value of one week’s share, the discount code will cover the total and no other payment is necessary. If your order is less than the set share value, you’ll get Farm Credit to be used towards future purchases. If your order greater than your share value, you’ll have to pay the difference with a payment method of your choice. 

If you don’t log in to finalize your share, GrownBy will create a share for you based on your preferences. 

You will get a order confirmation. Before your pickup or delivery, you’ll get a reminder to be sure to pick up. Enjoy!

Customer FAQ for Customized Shares

  1. When can I customize my share?
    1. Each farm sets their opening and closing times. You’ll get an automated notification (email and push notification, if enabled) when your window opens. That message will also say when the window closes.
  2. What happens if I don’t edit my order?
    1. GrownBy will create an order based on your preferences, if you have added them. When the customization window closes, an order will be placed for you.
  3. What do I tell GrownBy about my preferences?
    1. Anything you want! If your farm sells meat but you’re vegan, be sure to tell us. If you like doubles of certain products, tell us that, too. If you love tomatoes and hate cucumbers, let us know.
  4. What if I’m going to miss a pick up?
    1. If your farm offers vacation weeks, be sure to claim a vacation week. If not, you can always have a friend, family member, or neighbor pickup in your place. Some farms also offer the option to donate your share. Check in with your farmer to learn more about their policies.
  5. What if I miss my window to customize?
    1. That’s okay! GrownBy will place your order for you, based on your preferences.
  6. What is the customization window?
    1. This is the time period before your distribution during which you are able to customize.
  7. What if my order is under my share value?
    1. You’ll receive Farm Credit to be used towards a future purchase with the farm. Check in with your farm about any policies about when and how your Farm Credit can be used.
  8. What if my order is over my share value?
    1. That’s fine, too. GrownBy will charge the Credit Card or ACH on file for the remaining balance during the checkout process.
  9. What if I want to order extra?
    1. That’s excellent. As long as your farm has extra inventory, you can use a credit card or ACH at checkout for any extra produce you’d like to order.
  10. Why do I get billed an amount that is different from my weekly share value?
    1. GrownBy’s subscription installments use a slightly different logic than the weekly value of your share. The farm’s set up, including payment schedules, deposits, skip weeks, and other details, might make the weekly installment payment different from the value you get per week to customize your share. You’re welcome to review your invoices on your invoice page or ask our support team to explain your farm’s payment structure to you anytime!
  11. When do I get charged a delivery fee?
    1. If your farmer offers home delivery for a fee, that fee is charged on the day of delivery. So, you will receive a notification of that charge the morning of your delivery. If you claim a vacation week, no delivery fee will be charged.
